This versatile breed has existed only since the middle of the 20th century. It was developed by crossing an Appaloosa horse and a Shetland pony, to produce what could be described as a miniature Appaloosa.
In 1956 an American names leslie Boomhower mated a Shetland stallion to an Appaloosa mare. The offspring was a colt called Black Hand, who became the foundation sire for this new breed.
Astud book has been started and only those ponies with sturdy conformation and traditional Appaloo-sa markings are selected for entry.
The Pony of the Americas can be seen in show rings all over North Americas and serves as an all-round children's pony.
Appearance: The body is rounded and deep through the girth, with muscular quarters and short, tough legs.
Height: 11.2 to 13 hands.
Colour: Normal Appaloosa markings appear: leopard spotted, snowflake, marble, frost and white blanket.
Personality: Like its ancestors, the Pony of the Americas is kind natured and easy to handle. Because of its small size, the breed is ideal for children.
